At Long Last, the Spencer Jones Show has Arrived

They're calling Spencer Jones and Aaron Judge the "Twin Towers Outfield."

They're calling Spencer Jones and Aaron Judge the "Twin Towers Outfield."

Doth my eyes deceive me? The New York Yankees are calling up Spencer Jones? The Spencer Jones?! Be still, my beating heart! It would appear that the Bronx Bombers have finally promoted their fabled 6-foot-7 slugger, after Jasson Dominguez sprained his shoulder making a catch against the wall in Yankee Stadium on Thursday. After years of teasing us with Minor League and Spring Training highlights, fans finally get the chance to witness the home run bashing, base-stealing, lefty behemoth on the biggest stage.

The Next Aaron Judge?

Jones has long been compared to Aaron Judge due to their near identical size, feats of strength, and surprising athleticism. Hell, their stances and swings look alike too, one being from the left side and one being from the right. They also had shockingly similar numbers in the Minors, with Judge hitting .276/.371/.471 for his career down there, and Jones, to this point, hitting .270/.351/.497.

So, is this soon-to-be 25-year-old outfielder the next Aaron Judge? Of course not. Judge is a once in a generation player who blossomed in the Majors, far outpacing what his Minor League numbers suggested he would be. With that short porch in right field, though? This Spencer Jones ride could be a fun one.

Laser Show

Sorry to quote a famous Red Sox player in Dustin Pedroia while writing an article about a Yankee, but expect a laser show when Spencer Jones steps into the box. He makes the hardest contact in the Minor Leagues, at a max of 117.4 MPH. He also paces the Minors in average exit velocity; he hits the ball hard, and often. He also swings and misses often.

Spencer Jones will strike out. Spencer Jones will strike out a lot. He was sent down on strikes 200 times in 2024, 179 times in 2025, and 46 times so far this season (in 142 plate appearances). Luckily, he mitigates this issue by drawing a fair amount of free passes, leading to his solid .351 career OBP. But many Spencer Jones at bats will culminate in a mighty swing and a miss for strike three. So it goes for 6’7” mashers keen on breaking the sound barrier with their next ball in play.

Fleet of Foot

You can also expect to see some action on the bases. This is not your usual lumbering base clogger. He is a three-outcome hitter, to be sure, but isn’t station to station once he gets on. Jones swiped 46 bags in 2023, 25 in 2024, and 29 in 2025. He’s stolen seven bases so far this season. It isn’t often you see someone Aaron Judge’s size who’s able to make an impact on the bases like Judge does, but the Yankees seem to have found another one. Must be nice!

Here to Stay?

I expect Spencer Jones to stick around. Jasson Dominguez has a ton of talent and is just 23, but fate might’ve just opened a door that Jones will close behind him. When Dominguez is healthy again, presumably in a month or so, there will once again be a logjam with Jones, Judge, Cody Bellinger, and Trent Grisham in the mix, especially with Giancarlo Stanton occupying the DH spot once he's back. If I'm a Yankee fan, I'm taking this as a good problem that most teams would kill to have. A cross that bridge when we get there situation. For now, Jones will have an opportunity to establish himself as a big leaguer.

There will certainly be ups and downs for this Adam Dunn-type hitter, but Jones’s mix of skills at his size will make him exciting no matter what. The wait is over, my friends. Spencer Jones has finally arrived in pinstripes.
